What the Science Says
BJ Fogg’s research at Stanford identified that habits are best formed when they’re:
- Small enough to do even on your worst day
- Anchored to something you already do
- Celebrated immediately after completion
The celebration part surprises most people. Our instinct is to reserve good feelings for big wins. But Fogg found that the positive emotion needs to happen at the moment of completing the habit — not when the results arrive months later.
Streaks as Feedback
Streaks work because they give you immediate feedback on consistency. Seeing “14-day streak” creates a visceral reason not to break the chain. This is the same psychological mechanism behind commitment devices and loss aversion.

Building Your Stack
The most effective approach we’ve seen: start with one habit. Not three, not five — one. Prove to yourself you can be consistent with one thing before adding another.
Once that habit is automatic (typically 60-90 days), add a second. Stack them deliberately, anchoring the new habit to the existing one.
